A photograph is what it appears to be. Already far from ‘reality’ because of its silence, lack of movement, two-dimensionality and isolation from everything outside the rectangle, it can create another reality, an emotion that did not exist in the ‘true’ situation. It’s the tension between these two realities that lends it strength.

Photography is the air

I breathe, the water I drink,

the fire I step through,

the rock I’m standing on.

If you greatly admire many of

Edward Weston’s photographs

– as I do – and if you find them

aesthetically majestic, recognize

their substantial influence and

their high status in contemporary

criticism, you may turn to the

photographer’s writings in an

effort to discover his intentions,

his philosophies, perhaps even his secrets.

Expect complexity.
