Quote of the Day

October 21, 2009

Here, then, was a paradox of

picture taking that appeared

from the start. Despite its

promise of the ultimate

document, of a picture more

realistic than art could

achieve, the camera was also

an instrument of artifice

and posing, even fakery

and deceit. The invention

that enabled people to write

with the sun would blur the distinction between appearance and reality,

between the image and the event.

Quote of the Day

October 7, 2009

Life appears always fully present . . .

a brief weary smile, a twitch of the

hand, the fugitive pour of sun

through clouds. And not a tool, save

the camera, is capable of registering

such complex ephemeral responses,

and expressing the full majesty of

the moment. The impressionists tried

in vain to achieve the notation.

For, consciously or unconsciously, what they were striving to demonstrate

with their effects of light was the truth of moments; impressionism has ever

sought to fix the wonder of the here, the now. But the momentary effects of

lighting escaped them while they were busy analyzing; and their ‘impression’

remains usually a series of impressions superimposed one upon the other.

Stieglitz was better guided. He went directly to the instrument made for him.

Poem: Meeting

On the bridge, he sips her breath,

seals her back, is of her shape

what she is not. I am already that

which they abhor – my unintentioned

place in their sun, intrusive. If

those waters could keep their gaze,

I’d slip into shadow, retrace my

own false steps, turn up elsewhere –

though when I first began, this path

was mine. They notice me – and

part. Half a step beyond, I am

tempted by their love to try again.
